When droplets of ink or combination of ink & paper are left on the idlers, nips, or the chopper table on the printing press, it is known as a setoff. In case of sheetfed presses, setoff is mostly accompanied with smudging. There may be several causes behind the occurrence of setoff,

some of which have been explained below:

Improper alignment of bustle wheels

This is one of the most common causes of a setoff. When the press is running, one may not notice that the bustle wheels have not been lined properly. However, care should be taken to ensure their correct positioning.

Pressure of air flow

Angle bars and former board are friction points, and thus, demand air flow, so that they can function properly. It is imperative to make sure that they receive the adequate amount of air flow pressure.

Temperature of the heatset dryer

Extreme temperatures of the oven may have an adverse effect on the printing task. While too high temperatures may trigger chalking, too low temperatures may result in dark setoffs. Owing to high temperatures, the ink may get cooked up, resulting in the pigments not being held in their precise place. This, in turn, causes the ink deposits to build up in various places.

Improper setting of chill rollers

There is no denying that the ink will dry properly, only if the chill rolls have been set properly. If they are set below the required limit, it may lead to condensation followed by drips or web breaks. Similarly, if they are kept above the standard limit, the ink will not set properly, leading to a setoff.

Dirty Grater Rollers

While working on coldset presses, grater rollers may get dirty. This primarily happens when one runs the black color in high densities. Lowering the density, whilst ensuring good solids, will prohibit the grater rollers from getting dirty, thereby, avoiding setoff to a great extent.

Of course, there may be other reasons behind the occurrence of setoffs.
